I was sweating so hard cleaning up the dog run today haha. Still it was nice to be outside and getting some low impact exercise in. My garden is looking wonderful in the fall, I can't wait for my milkweed to flower.

    Waste
While water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?

Using reusable containers is something I simply grew up with. We wouldn't get coffee out, it was at home. As for water, I grew up in Bend, Or, and I won't lie it is still the best water I've ever had- right from the tap. It wasn't until I visited one of my Tia's in California that I realized why someone might buy a water bottle. The water tasted unholy. I couldn't believe this was some of peoples only access to water. These were one of the first privileges I became conscious of having. To this day I make my coffee at home, all my grounds are used for hydrangea mulch, and drink water from a big mason jar.

I have a hard time understanding why so many people I know opt to pay for coffee, even on a lazy weekend when time isn't a factor, when there are so many wonderful beans available that we can brew at home. A couple of dollars per serving adds up quickly, while I can get more than 30 servings out of a five-dollar package of coffee. Not only do you get the benefit of mulch when you home-perk, you also get to enjoy the aroma for quite a while! Little things like that also add up...at least they do for me.

In what ways can you create more real and meaningful interactions with friends — or strangers — each week?

Talking to strangers has never been something I was particularly good at. I have a tendency to be blunt- not in a mean way- my voice rather monotone, for those with anxiety I tend to notice them quickly become uncomfortable in the lack of information in my face and tone. I also have a learning disorder that makes it hard to recall nouns when speaking- I know, bummer. So lately I've brought my fiancé with me like an emotional support dog. He always knows how to soften social interactions, helps me to more effortlessly join in when I've sorted my thoughts, gives me the buffer time I need to think about how to soften the edges of my words. It's helped a lot with improving my social skills, especially as an autistic individual this is really meaningful to me. I'm happy to have taken on this challenge. I think my neighbors are less hesitant around me already!

Monday and Wednesday I walk to and from my Painting class. Making it easy for me to get my exercise in and feel the sun on my face. I finished a piece today about the 2002 Klamath River Salmon disaster, an event very close to my heart as it impacted many Native tribes. I had a very cathartic experience talking to my classmates about this event, how Dams, farmers, and drought all played a part in this catastrophe. Anywhere from between 35k-70k fish were lost, including the Klamath Salmon which supports Native communities and is used in their ceremonies, changing their way of life.

Read about this long fight recently and so glad to perseverance of tribes the dams came down in the Klamath - kudos! May the fish replenish and multiply!

Today I am helping someone apart of my queer, poor, disabled community. Our bonds are strong and we work together to safely and swiftly get her out of a bad situation. I hope one day we can have a broader access to community support, there are many of us falling through the cracks.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community
What makes you feel connected to your neighborhood, your neighbors, or another kind of community in your life?

I have many neighbors with beautiful gardens, tall trees, and right around the corner our park is renovating to join our pollinator gardens and further the impact of our diverse flora. Every time I see a hummingbird, I think of the flowers they must have visited, like the house covered top to bottom in roses, or the school garden we share our road with.

    Health
How can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?

I walked to and from school for my painting class today. During my walk I listened to Maintenance Phase, a podcast that often talks about health and food.
