  • REFLECTION QUESTION

Kathleen Dean Moore says that a sense of gratitude leads to a sense of moral obligation. Do you agree? How can we cultivate a sense of gratitude as individuals, and as a society?

I think Kathleen Dean Moore makes a compelling point. Gratitude does seem to nurture a sense of moral obligation by helping us realize the interdependence and shared goodness of life. When we’re truly grateful, it's often for things that reflect kindness, beauty, or generosity given to us, often unearned or beyond our control—like nature, family, and health. This awareness of how much we receive often inspires a reciprocal desire to give back, to take care of others, and to contribute meaningfully to our world.
To cultivate gratitude individually, mindfulness is a powerful tool. Practicing mindfulness—by taking a moment to notice small, good things each day—helps us focus on what we have instead of what we lack. Acts like journaling about daily gratitudes, meditating, or even pausing before meals can foster this. On a societal level, education and public policies could emphasize community service, environmental stewardship, and appreciation for shared resources, encouraging collective responsibility and gratitude. Imagine a society where public art, parks, and institutions honor shared history and the environment; these could serve as reminders o
f the value of gratitude and our duty to sustain what we cherish.

I am grateful to be outside and have fresh air with my dogs.

What did you observe while spending time outside -- through sight, sound, smell and/or touch?

I was able to really enjoy the smells, I was able to feel and smell the fresh rain. I could feel the crisp air and hear all the crunches of leaves
me. I really felt i could just be one with nature in this experience.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation
Take a moment to think of places you frequent often (work, grocery store, school, natural areas). Could you choose one or two days a week to schedule driving with a friend, neighbor or co-worker to these places?

A co worker and I had to go into office this week, we both live near each other and decided to drive together.
