This is a tough one, because we already try to do a lot to conserve water. Having grown up in California during extreme drought, we learned a lot as kids about how to conserve! I think we are ready to get into things like a graywater system and a rain barrel to lower our footprint even more.

Don't ever stop Jennifer! I really hope to see more gray water systems come into being and we have a 6700 gallon water tank buried outside our home for fire - it's filled by any rain and melting snow we get. My husband is pretty amazing about some things.

That’s amazing, Jennifer! Growing up with that awareness must have given you such a strong foundation in conservation. Adding a graywater system and a rain barrel sounds like a great next step—it’s inspiring to see how you’re constantly looking for ways to conserve more. Small changes like these really add up!

    Waste
How can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?

At this stage of my life, I do not often buy new clothes unless I need a new size or something has worn out (and I keep clothing for a long long time now!). I am a fan of minimalism, however I think it makes sense to keep some clothing from different trends so we can bring them back out if we want to be on trend again!

Fresh air and movement are good for our entire being and can help us think more clearly and creatively. How does taking a walk each day affect yourself and/or your work?

I wish I had more time to walk each day, but even a short 10-minute walk around our campus is energizing and helps keep me centered.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

How does/can practicing gratitude keep you centered and motivated to work for a better world?

During the Social Justice Conference on campus, I was able to participate in an engagement/workshop session led by Calvin Terrell. During this workshop, attendees were led through an experience of open conversation and emotion-driven learning about how many of us have similar beginnings, trauma, and can heal together. Organically, I felt so many things that I am grateful for, and especially these moments that I shared with colleagues, students and community members.

How can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place -- your deep knowledge of and appreciation for your surroundings?

I went to the new State Park near Modesto, Dos Rios. I was expecting a lot more to be finished, but so glad we have this! There is only a small portion of the trails completed and open to the public, but they do have scheduled programming that you can go on the other trails. https://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=31363

The new park looks wonderful, full of potential. I am glad that people from your part of the state are being served, and the unique resources of the area conserved!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste
What do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you or aren't allowed to use the one you brought? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?

I've been bringing reusable bags with me since before it was mandated, but of course I forget too! Typically I will just put the items loose in my cart and car. Sometimes if I've bought a lot I will ask for paper bags but cringe if they only have plastic. Good news is that starting in 2026, CA will no longer be able to sell those 'reusable' plastic bags!

I try to keep bags in my car...but even sometimes I forget to carry them in.
