Miranda's actions
Health
Eliminate Toxic Plastics
I will avoid buying toxic plastics - including polycarbonate, polystyrene and polyvinyl - and instead replace them with durable non-plastic options.
Food
Zero-Waste Cooking
Food waste hurts our planet and our communities. I will cook 2 meals with zero waste each day.
Nature
Support Local Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will spend 15 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.
Waste
Collect Litter on a Plog / Plalk
Each day, I will go on a plog or plalk for 10 minutes and collect 25 items of litter.
Simplicity
Needs Vs. Wants
I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach and only buy things I need.
Health
Audit Toxic Cleaning Products in my Home
I will spend 60 minutes researching toxic chemicals found in cleaning supplies and personal care products and remove them from my home.
Energy
Learn About Energy Issues on the Ballot
I will spend 20 minutes learning about local or national energy issues that will be on the voting ballot this fall.
Nature
Is Nature on the Ballot?
I will spend 10 minutes per day finding out what sustainability and nature-related legislation is on local and state ballots this year.

Miranda La Prelle 10/25/2024 5:15 PMIt has been going well. I have saved energy turning off lights. I have gotten better at needs and wants and its connection to zero waste. I have been washing my clothes on low water cycles/ heat. I've shared my findings with my family and they are helping me continue these actions. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodIn North America, up to 65% of food waste happens at the consumer level. Chef Steven Satterfield advocates for using every part of a vegetable. How can you incorporate using an entire vegetable (including the skins, tops, stalks, etc.) during your next meal prep?
Miranda La Prelle 10/20/2024 5:43 PMIt’s been hard to keep up with this. I have been doing better but it’s not easy. -
Miranda La Prelle 10/17/2024 10:46 AMI've been doing research on food and water insecurity in my area to better understand how the community is dealing with hazards. Recently I have been washing my clothes by hand if possible and reusing the water for mopping the mud room. This seems to be helping save lots of water. I'm looking for new ways to continue doing this if anyone knows. -
Miranda La Prelle 10/06/2024 2:36 PMBrought my own produce cloth hand sewed bags to get organic only paper/recyclable products. Fair trade, and certified "sustainable" products if needed. Making my own pesto from friends over load of basil from growing season.-
Jeanne Poirier 10/06/2024 5:06 PMI'm hoping to make up bags for produce as well! Thanks for the inspiration Miranda! I made up batches of pesto and have them in the freezer for the lovely basil taste all through to next season :)

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealthTo what extent do environmental factors contribute to your own health or issues with health?
Miranda La Prelle 10/04/2024 12:13 PMI don't get outside enough because of noise pollution-
Jeanne Poirier 10/04/2024 8:05 PMGenerally noise pollution equates to air pollution too. Do what you can Miranda. As a privileged old lady it is good for me to hear these truths.
