Hard to believe this is the last day - hopefully I will retain my newly formed habits. May you all be safe, healthy and blessed.

I had to drive to Olympia today for my AARP tax training and I saw something that I had not seen in a long, long while - especially in East Wenatchee. A full half-circle rainbow that crossed both sides of 90. What a treat!

I'll be travelling the next few days and hope I can maintain my check ins. I may not be able to continue the extra sleep or 4 servings of fruits and vegetables - but we will see. I want to be sure I check-in on the correct date also, delaying makes it more difficult to be current and accurate. Be safe and be well.

How is planting trees good for your mental, physical, and spiritual health?

    Shayne Magdoff's avatar
    Shayne Magdoff 10/28/2024 9:08 AM
The results of planting trees - first, the action itself feels good to dig in the earth; second the end result of growth provides beauty, shade and a place to store carbon.
Listening to the leaves in a soft breeze is very soothing. Being surrounded by beauty is always spiritual to me.

Well I shared my why today. To tell the truth, so many of the activities available I have already done. However, the reflection questions and the research actions give me a lot to learn - so here I am participating in another EcoChallenge.

Kathleen Dean Moore says that a sense of gratitude leads to a sense of moral obligation. Do you agree? How can we cultivate a sense of gratitude as individuals, and as a society?

    Shayne Magdoff's avatar
    Shayne Magdoff 10/24/2024 2:21 PM
If we didn't have the earth - there wouldn't be a society. It has given us sustenance for our lives and in the end - we go back to it in some way.
That connection alone should give us a sense of gratitude and the desire to take care of our home. We are all connected - all of us call earth our home. Being grateful - draws others to you who are grateful. And when we are grateful we tend to want to give back. And giving back keeps us connected. You know what they say - what goes around comes around. It's up to us to decide what type of boomerang we want to be dealing with.

And I am grateful for you too. - your first boomerang

Thank you for this wisdom and insight Shayne! I think today I especially needed to hear this. . . . giving back keeps us connected - what type of boomerang - being grateful draws others who are grateful.
      Grateful for you my friend!!

Fall is kicking into high gear - colors are brightening up my view and I am loving it. I grew up without four seasons - spring with everything blooming and fall when everything takes a rest for the winter are some of my favorite times. Spending time outside then is such a treat. I am grateful for the beauty that surrounds us.

What was it like to actively listen to someone? How did both people and the conversations benefit from active listening?

    Shayne Magdoff's avatar
    Shayne Magdoff 10/22/2024 2:31 PM
If you actively listen to someone - they can express their thoughts and not be rushed by interruptions. One can find out what is important to that person.
I really have to practice - not that I am not interested in what the person has to say - but my mind is mercurial (fast and bouncing all over the place) and I want to ask questions to clarify. If we do converse through active listening both or all in the conversation fee respected and heard.

I answered my reflection question about how to participate in decision making - politically. What I did not say that it really peeves me when someone just says something = repeats what is heard - but never does any research on their own. Example: I am not voting for the school bond because I am not so sure about the school system. Have you ever gone to school board meetings - no; have you ever visited the schools - no. Grrr.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community
Why is voting important to creating a just, sustainable, and thriving world? In what other ways can you actively participate in important decision-making?

    Shayne Magdoff's avatar
    Shayne Magdoff 10/22/2024 2:25 PM
We have the luxury in this country to vote in order to maintain our freedom. If you don't exercise your right - then you can't complain. And while one particular vote didn't make a difference in a particular election - giving up the right let's the wrong guy win.
There are other ways locally to participate in decision-making. Attend public meetings - city, county PUD, and others. Hear what is going on - you may have a public comment which is always welcome. You can also write your legislators or testify in person or online about a particular bill.
And even if you only want to do one small thing - all of us together can make a difference and participate.
