Thomas Saad 10/29/2024 10:22 AMI donate to my grandson's Cub Scout Troups Annual Food Drive! It's exciting to see his eyes when he helps chose things out of my pantry! -
Adam Moen 10/29/2024 6:20 AMI agree the food waste is an issue. The food pantries I am talking about though actually work very well and the families that rely on it desperately need it. Neighbors will purposely buy more food than they need so they can donate just bought items (so nothing expired) so their neighbors that can't afford the store can stop and get new food. My mom has talked in length about how much people really are coming together for it. It isn't perfect, and of course there is still waste. But given how it just a small scale neighborhood thing there isn't much organizing since it is small. And since it's not an actual nonprofit organizing there isn't anyone to take money donations. Though for larger groups that have outreach to more than just a few city blocks, absolutely money is more helpful as they have more resources to get people exactly what they need. -
Kay Levriero 10/29/2024 6:13 AMI'm not super into donating food, as someone who had to organize/go through all the canned goods donated to the Lock Haven Women's Shelter... just please please donate money.

Adam Moen 10/29/2024 6:14 AMI really do enjoy these challenges and it makes me very happy to see so many people participating. Sometimes it can feel like all I can do is preach to the choir while the visibility of what changes we are making is hard to see. But the more you involve yourself the more you can actually see the differences and changes that we are making. How much effort people around you are putting in. It lets you know that we can do this, and honestly, we will-- because there really isn't any other choice. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodWhy do you donate food? How does it connect to your values?
Adam Moen 10/29/2024 6:05 AMWhile it isn't helpful to donate food that's already about to expire-- or even has-- from the back of your pantry, it is still super helpful to donate food when you can that is actually useful. My hometown has several food pantry areas where you can go and get free donated food, from fresh fruit to long term staples. My mom's library helps run one of them and she always tells me lovely stories about people being very grateful for it. Especially families. You never know who you might help, but you will know if you're not doing something when you could be. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWasteIn what neighborhoods or areas of your region are landfills or other waste sites located? Which communities are most affected by these locations?
Adam Moen 10/28/2024 6:38 AMThe landfill I know of is on the way out to the countryside. It makes sense that it is further away from more populated areas and thankfully it doesn't smell. I have been near others that smell awful and are right next to large towns and shopping centers. It was far enough away that you could only faintly smell it, but to get to the area you have to go past it. I couldn't imagine how frustrating it would be to live around that place.-
Thomas Saad 10/28/2024 8:07 AMThe sad thing is trash has to get dumped somewhere and the cost of dumping increases our trash expense :(

REFLECTION QUESTIONNatureHow well do you know the area you live in? In what ways is a deep knowledge of your surroundings -- known as a 'sense of place' -- important to you?
Adam Moen 10/28/2024 6:35 AMI did a gardening day at my old city just before I moved and it was a lot of fun. It's nice to know I am leaving the city better than I found it-- and that others can enjoy the work we did. It will always be my home as it's my home town, so I hope it can continue to grow. -

Adam Moen 10/25/2024 6:36 AMI really like how this challenge has encouraged me to get outside and move around more. I was already a very active person, but I would usually just go hiking. I rarely would just sit and watch the sunrise. It's been nice getting myself the opportunities to do so now. -
Adam Moen 10/24/2024 6:09 AMOne week left and we're in 12th place! Not bad at all. I wonder if we can make it to the top 10?
