  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation
The US spends roughly 20% of its federal budget on defense. In contrast, 2% goes to education, 20% goes to social security and just 3% goes to transportation infrastructure. Do these numbers surprise you at all? Why or why not? How would you adjust them if you could?

I posted this as a response to someone else earlier but I thought I'd add it as an action here. In my case, I want to reduce my use of car and plane transportation in general. I don't think this will mean daily bus rides, but fewer car trips, more walking and use of public transportation where possible. I went to LA for fall break to see my new grandson for the first time. That's a big carbon emission! However, we ONLY rode the bus for transport the entire time. It was only 23 minutes from LAX to my airbnb, quicker and easier than an Uber. The city of Santa Monica has an incredible, fast, clean, safe, low emission bus fleet. And, for people 55 and over, it is only $0.50! Regular price $1.25, still incredibly reasonable. I did think it ironic that I got a senior discount at a point in my life when I need the discount the least. We need to rethink senior discounts, as people over 55 and even over 65 have much higher incomes and wealth on average than the rest of the population. Maybe let it kick in at 70?

That's so interesting about senior discounts, thanks for sharing your perspective. I guess maybe they were more common to accommodate people living on a fixed income - but now perhaps, since some data says that retirees now are the one of the wealthiest generations ever - it might need to shift for some? Thought provoking! Thank you!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food
Michael Pollan states that “it is better to pay the grocer (our edit: or the farmer!) than the doctor.” What are your thoughts on this assertion?

I am excited about eating a higher proportion of whole foods. It's easier on weekends when I have the ability to cook. Today, it will be three meals, oatmeal breakfast, garden vegetable (from our garden) scrambled eggs (from inhumane conditions probably), and home made scallop pasta.

I had oatmeal too - with raisins and oat milk. Kudos to gather from the garden - sometime Martin, you may choose to learn about those inhumane choices. My poor husband sure wishes I hadn't!! HA!

How can Restorative Justice help foster the well-being of both people and planet?

    Martin Monto's avatar

restorative justice has a different meaning when referring to crime, where the term was developed, but it is overlapping. in environmental justice, restorative justice means recognizing the disproportionate environmental harm and environmental risk experienced by disadvantaged communities, often people with lower SES and people of color. Additionally, restorative justice means supporting those communities in recognizing their environmental risks and empowering themselves to advocate for their interests. Though more advantaged people have a role to play in restorative justice, its important to recognize that it's not the powerful people benevolently solving the problems of the less powerful people, but rather supporting the less powerful in determining their own destiny.

Encouraging wisdom as I picked this challenge also. Very helpful post, thank you!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy
Your utility company is able to tell you your average energy usage. Ask them how your energy usage compares to others in your ZIP code, region, and/or state. What other steps can you take each day to reduce your electricity usage?

Just got my little gas fireplace fixed, so we can turn down the thermostat and consequently keep the sleeping areas colder and just heat the smaller space we will inhabit when we are awake
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation
Reducing (or eliminating) exhaust emissions and improving public health are two benefits of green vehicles. What other motivators inspire you to consider switching to a more fuel-efficient vehicle?

I spend all morning researching ebikes today. I am selling my heavy ebikes to buy some lighter, more portable, folding ebikes that I can use more frequently and easily.

In what ways can you create more real and meaningful interactions with friends — or strangers — each week?

One way is to be outside the house when possible and to engage actively when we take our daily walks. Today, I put some ebikes out for sale (to be replaced by folding ebikes), and I got to meet two people to tell them about the joys of ebike riding.
