Nature
Listen to A Nature Podcast
I will spend 10 minutes listening to a podcast about nature.
Nature
Support Local Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will spend 30 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.
Energy
Adjust the Thermostat
I will adjust my thermostat down 2 degrees from usual when I use the heat, and up 2 degrees when I use air conditioning.
Simplicity
Meditate
I will meditate or create a moment of silence for 7 minutes each day to reflect on things important to me.
Simplicity
Needs Vs. Wants
I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach and only buy things I need.
Transportation
Research and Consider Switching to a Hybrid or Electric Vehicle
I will spend at least 20 minutes researching and weighing my options to see if a hybrid or electric vehicle makes sense for my lifestyle.
Energy
Upgrade Heating & Cooling Units
I will replace inefficient heating and cooling units with energy saving units.
Energy
Turn It Off
I will keep lights, electronics, and appliances turned off when not using them.

Gustin Nijo 10/31/2024 5:30 PMDuring the eco-challenge we got a new smart thermostat. We have it set to turn off when we are at work and lower when we are sleeping. It's been great. -
Gustin Nijo 10/25/2024 5:58 PMI watched a youtube on needs versus wants. I already knew a lot of the information, but felt it was good to be reminded of these messages. -
Gustin Nijo 10/25/2024 5:57 PMThe youtube I watched on thinking about needs versus wants was okay. I already knew a lot of the information, and I didn't have any take aways for doing something different. But I appreciated the information that's always good to remind us to leave a positive footprint . -
Gustin Nijo 10/24/2024 7:46 PMI listened to the podcast 99% Invisible the episode "On Beeing". I learned how there are more "farmed" bees than wild bees. This is a phenomenon that I knew nothing about before the podcast. I knew that humanity depends on pollinators, but didn't realize there was such a shift from wild bees to "little winged cows" that depend on humans.-
Mary Hanks 10/24/2024 9:52 PMI've learned a lot about farmed bees and agriculture in general by working these Ecochallenges. Understanding my world better helps me live in balance with it, making changes that become habits and fully inform my lifestyle.

REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergyWhat inspires you to act on sustainable energy and other energy issues?
Gustin Nijo 10/16/2024 6:47 PMOur furnace was not working well so we upgraded it with a smart thermostat that we can set to have the heat low when we are sleeping and at work. We also signed up for a pilot program to get a free heat pump from the Energy Trust of Oregon. Heat pumps are the most efficient way to heat in Oregon at this moment. -
Gustin Nijo 10/13/2024 1:32 PMI listened to Jane Goodall Hopecast--a podcast where she Senator Cory Booker. It was fantastic.
