Sarah's actions
Health
Happiness
I will write down three things every day that I am grateful for, or send one email every day thanking or praising someone.
Energy
Turn It Off
I will keep lights, electronics, and appliances turned off when not using them.
Water
Calculate My Water Footprint
I will calculate my Water Footprint to learn about my tap water use and "virtual water" use.
Waste
Personal Waste Audit
I will collect all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill.
Nature
Outside Moments
As a busy college student, my goal is to spend more time outdoors, even during a packed schedule. Whether it's walking to class, heading to the dining hall, or simply taking a short break outside, I want to integrate more moments in nature into my day. Since most of my work is online and it's hard to use my computer in the sun, this action focuses on being outside without replacing indoor activities, helping me find a balance between productivity and well-being. I will measure this action by tracking the number of times I spend at least 5 minutes outside each day.
Health
Healthy Sleep
Effectively working for sustainability requires self care! I will commit to getting 30 more minute(s) of sleep each night to achieve at least 7 hours per night.
Simplicity
Less Screen Time
I will replace 10 minutes of screen time each day with other activities.
Energy
Online Energy Audit
I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.
Community
Did You Vote
This action is a reminder to exercise your right to vote and be a part of the decision-making process. I chose this action to celebrate civic engagement
Simplicity
Declutter for a Fresh Start
Choose one area in your life—whether it’s a drawer, closet, or digital space—and declutter it. By letting go of what you don’t need, you’re creating room for clarity and purpose. This action helps build a habit of simplicity and brings a refreshing sense of organization and calm.
Share My Why
Share My Why
I will share my Ecochallenge story and why I'm taking action for the planet.
Health
Go Get a Check Up
I will make an appointment for my annual physical.
Transportation
Car Share
I will sign up for a car-sharing service, or organize car sharing with my neighbors, to cut down on the number of vehicles on the road.
Transportation
Stay on the Ground
Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).

Sarah Simon 10/30/2024 8:22 PMMy appreciation for sustainability grew from seeing the impact of single-use waste on our planet. Growing up, I used reusable sandwich wraps and water bottles, which saved hundreds of plastic bags from going to landfills. A memorable experience was a family trip to Alaska, where our tour bus lunch used only recyclable or compostable items. It’s small actions like these that inspired me to join the EcoChallenge and make more sustainable choices every day.-

Sarah Simon 10/30/2024 8:06 PMMy EcoChallenge is going well! I’ve been finding small ways to incorporate more sustainable habits into my daily routine, like remembering to turn off lights if they’re not in use, learning about the importance of being outside, and being more mindful about decluttering. It’s rewarding to see how these small actions can make a difference.
